don't know how to say this so it comes out right..
on my one hive its been slow to fill the brood box ..  Now last night I looked at it and noticed that its all brood...
the bottom box ..the left out side frame is honey both sides  ,, the right outside frame,, nothing is on the outer side ,,, the inside of the frame is about a 4th drawn out but nothing in it ,,,one frame about 3/4 honey both sides ,,, the other 7 frames are brood .. nice big laying pattern  ,, honey on the outer ends and 1 inch  strip on the top .........  top brood box   on 2 frames they have drawn out about 1/4 of three sides in nice brood arc with eggs layed in it already ,,,,  now the kicker  ,,,,  I put 2 frames full of honey in on monday ,, they are empting both sides of one frame again in a nice arc and filling it with brood ,,, and it looks like they might be trying to do this with the other frame to .... this hive has very very little honey in it ...
this  is suppose to be the educated hive ,that read the how to do bee business book ...  the other hive is suppose to be the grade school drop out hive ,, that one does nothing by the book ,,  but Im thrying to build up 2 other hives with frames from it .. its a realy good hive

WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON????????????

Probably they want the room to raise brood in, so when you put in a frame or two of honey, they are re-distributing and using the honey, and will lay up those frames.

Sounds like they are still focused on building up. They will keep working on that top box, keep an eye on them.

What's your weather like? If you're experiencing the hot, dry weather that's covering much of the country your bees aren't going to be building comb, etc.

Understudy

The books you read won't describe this well.

Hives have personalities. Each one different from the next. I have one hive that has a queen that lays like there is no tomorrow I cannot keep enough brood boxes on the hive. The cost very little honey but a great layer. The benefit I pull frames from this hive to use on my other hives if they get weak. I have a hive gathers lots of honey but doesn't lay a lot more than two mediums. The cost weak hive susceptible to infection or invasion by pests. The benefit lots and lots of honey.

The thing I am learning is that the balance makes the difference. Using my hives to support each other helps all the hives. I may not get great honey out of every hive but those that don't give me lots of honey give me lots of brood. As a hobbiest this works great for me. If I were commerical this would probably suck.
