so far, the cinnamon is winning.  i had ant nests on top of inner cover of two hives.  Now there are no ants on (or in) the hives with the cinnamon on the top of the inner cover (week+ later).  of course, there wasn't any cinnamon either, when i checked.  i wonder if the bees cleaned it up?  If the ants return, i will use it again.  thanks again to whoever suggested this solution originally.

Mr. BeeFree reports (after taking care of BeeFree's hives while she is "vacationing with the darling children"):

Ants stink. Cinnamon as an ant deterrent also sub-optimal. Sugar H20 filled with dead ant corpses, ants filing up side of hives in several lines, ants apparently trying to start colony on top of cinnamon. Spent several minutes covered in angry off ants and more angry off bees while trying to replace sugar water and add new cinnamon.
