Here is an idea for something new to beekeeping.

What about a giant scale that a hive is placed and secured onto (all year). This way one could monitor the weight of the hive and gage how much is being taken in each week.

I am using one. I posted several posts about, there was not much interest. It does not need to be giant scale. Four, five  hundred pounds max capacity is enough. I use regular doctors scale, it was cheepest I could find. I did post the picture. Works great.

Yah using cell phones to do that sounds a bit more complicated then it needs to be. I could understand if you had several achors of hives and wondered how the ones over the hill are doing. Something that is low tech and durable for the weather would be best for a hobbies such as myself.

Here is Finland's scale hives in the map. Pres red button and you get weight add of hive = honey+ brood+ pollen +bees

2007 was poor honey summer but 2006 and 2005 were superior.

Tervola point is quite near the Polar Circle and this is almost northern border of beekeeping in Finland.
