Well my Mann lake order arrived today, for joy.  I opened it up...and it looks small for being medium...I thought mediums were called 'illinois'...I am so confused..these look like shallows they are 6 5/b

When everyone here speaks of "mediums' do you mean 7 5/8???  I'd like to know before I plunk down another $100 bucks

I now have the wooden ware for 6   6 5/8 boxes...  hep me hep me

Kathyp

that's a med. or they are called in my catalog 'westerns'.  shallows are 5 3/4.

He is joking with you. There is no left or right handed mediums.

And yes what you received are mediums. You will love them, and they will look bigger when they have all that honey in them.

when you put the boxes together make sure you put the handles right side up and on the outside.

She is not joking. I got some hive bodies from a guy getting out and there are some upside down and a couple of inside handles. Really hard to get to.

DVD,
Don't worry you will not have to drink(that much). It gets a little confusing, but it is like driving a car. At first you are scared and may even back over the mailbox a few times, but after a while you are driving down the road at 80+mph doing your makeup, eating your bagel, and talking on your cell phone.
I have been building all my own stuff this winter (its my first year), and I have plenty firewood boxes. with handles on the inside, outside, upsidedown etc.

Yes Franz...

I did it...not at 80 MPH though...I am afraid you would all laugh at my jury riggged swarm trap placement...hope the bees don't find it too comical...

Pretty is as pretty does!  As long as it works then you did it "right", right?  :-D

6 7/8 is a medium aka Illinois.
7 7/8 (5/8) is a western once popular west of the Rockies in the 50-60's but it has mainly fallen out of favor.  Mann Lake Ltd is the only major manufacturer that still offers that option.

Western Bee Supply also offer the western supers. They are $2.90 less than Mann Lake when ordering a small amount of the budget boxes.
I've never used mediums either but will be starting four packages in some this year. I need to start some colonies in mediums and build up my medium colonies to the same number as colonies in deeps so I can have have nucs available in both sizes in a few years.
I've never used any eight frame equipment either but will also be using some eight framers this year as well. I might want to convert over before I get to crazy with my plans for expansion so I need to check out a few colonies in eight framers this year.
If you would happen to nail one of the sides with the handle to inside of the box don't feel bad, because I have a few supers like that floating around here somewhere. And these are my left or right handed models  of supers. :)

DayValleyDahlias

Yo Cass,

Fortunately I nailed them all with the handles on the outside & upright!  It was really fun.  Now comes the challenge of assembling frames, and placing foundation, whenever it arrives that is!
