making a split

can i make a split in southern new england this time of year (mid july) by taking 2 frames of capped brood with bees on them, buy a queen and introduce them to a nuc? i would be feeding them constantly and have pollen patties on them also.

I say go for it feed feed feed and over winter them in a 5 on 5 configureration with a good wind break and they have a good chance of making it

I just did two splits in Michigan, three if you count the original hive, it lost its queen but they made another, in fact they made lots of others hense the splits. all three have new queens, virgins at the moment but there, I figure they'll make it as long as I keep them fed and warm for the winter.

Bees convert honey to heat for winter warmth. Just make sure they are packed in good surrounded by cured/capped honey. Also can supplement dry granulated white sugar. Put and empty box on top with newspaper covering the top bars of the frames below in the hive. Make sure the newspaper does not cover from side to side but leave 3/8" space around the edged for the bees to come up through. Pour a 5lb bag of sugar on top of the newspaper and put a lid on the top of the top box containing the sugar. This is knows as Mountain Camp method of feeding dry sugar to bees over winter. The sugar absorbs moisture from the winter cluster and provides an emergency feed for the bees. Do a search in the forums for Mountain Camp
