Funny Sound from Hive

This afternoon I was inspecting my hives and heard a odd sound coming out from within one of the hives.  I could only hear it, if I placed my head close to the entrance.  I double checked that the sound was actually coming from the hive. Also checked my hearing aids.

It sounded like a gentle soft whirling sound.  It was not the normal busy humming sound I'd have expected. It was low in tone and fairly constant. Perhaps, it was just some resonant tone created by normal humming of the bees from within the hive. It was much lower in frequency, however. There was very little activity at the front of the hives. 

Any ideas ?

I think this is the sounds of thousands of female workers... fretting and worried on how will they spend the upcoming long winter month without drones?

Hi There,

I'm doing research on whether bee sounds are correlated with a disease or pest. I would love to hear a follow up on this hive and it's current health status. Are they still making the same noise? 

Also, a low roar is often associated with a queenless hive. Perhaps you should make sure she's still there.
