Candy Canes

FYI

At our bee club meeting this week someone mentioned now is a great time to buy discounted candy canes for pennies on the dollar and use for feed for the bees. Have any of you all done this?

With the corn starch and other damaging ingredients, candy canes should cure any constipation problems your bees may have.

i've seen candy canes used in a hive once (presumably for the sugar and the aromatic oils for "mite treatment". this particular hive had wax moths, afb, efb, chalkbrood, and shb.

the candy canes did not cause these problems, but they are indicative of the same level of care that leads to all these other problems. the beekeeper was smart enough to move these hives away from his other colonies (in a "hospital yard"), but oblivious enough to place them near other people's hives (including our own).

Ranks right up there with the beekeepers that put Hall's cough drops on the frame tops to fight tracheal mites :roll:

Are the artificial sweeteners that are used in candies bad for the bees? Can the bees make food or honey from them?
