That is three separate commercial-standard 10-frame Lang migratory covers on top.  The hive takes up to 33 deep Lang frames and could be supered in one or more stacks if desired.  I am too lazy to paint a fancy pattern (and don't want the hives to look too traditional in my urban neighborhood) so I use exterior wood stain on mine.
The bees would be no help; they would tumble over each other like golden babies and thrum wordlessly on the subjects of queens and sex and pollen-gluey feet. -Palimpsest
