i just started my beehive last night i have one box  and have my other box inside ready for when i need it. will the bees lay their eggs and make honey for the winter  in that box or will i need to add the other box so that they can make their honey store in there??
A swarm of bees in May is worth a load of hay; A swarm of bees in June is worth a silver spoon; A swarm of bees in July isn't worth a fly.

Wait until the bees have drawn out fully 6 to 7 frames in that first box before you add the second box.   They need to build up for the winter and will store honey over the brood.   But they have to get their numbers up before then.

What Allen said, and expect that to take 3 to 6 weeks. There won't be any additional bees in the hive for at least 3 weeks if you started with a package.

In the Adirondacks, you are going to want at least 2 deeps for the winter.
