glue, putty, or nothing

i just got a lot of pallets and old fencing to make some tbh's. my question is if i have a gap between boards im putting together what should i use if anything to fill in the gap? the boards are 1x4 and 1x6. was thinging of makeing nuc/ swarm boxes out of this material as well.

I would glue them. If the glue and paint does not completely fill the gap the bees will.
