Won't necessarily give them anything to do if there is nothing to do, as in a dearth. But it would give them more room to do nothing in. Of course you know you split a hive based on the condition of the hive not according to how many are hanging out. But yes it could be an indicator.

i'm in middle georgia and i've been in a dearth for a while.  i'm probably going to make splits when (if) the weather breaks.

Between all the rain we've been getting, I was finally able to take off all of the entrance reducers...What a BIG difference it made!
