Hi everyone. I live in QLD, Australia and was wondering about drones being produced in mild winters. Winter has just started here and I still have a few drones in the hives but not as many as there used to be. The climate here is great we dont get any frosts and the temperature rarely gets below 10 degrees celcius. My question is seeing that our hives dont really shut down over winter and a few drones are still around would I be able to split and requeen my strong hives by letting the girls supercede? Or would a strong drone congregation area be needed to mate with new queens? What experience do other people have with warm winters?

Here in Florida queen breeders stop production in Dec and Jan and July and Aug due to weather concerns. You could try a split and if they don't make a queen just recombine them.
