For some reason may be returning drones my girls are active in this time of day. I have read flights of new bees but today they were out

I never get tired of watching orientation flights.   Last year there were a few weeks where my girls would orient at 3pm on the nose.  Great entertainment.

That was a first attempt at hand holds with saw to cut out grabs but was a little deep so block handle it became

Block handles work.   Better than no handle at all - especially when those boxes get full.

If you were worried about robbing, it is not.
What was the weather doing? If there was a storm brewing, they all are rushing home for protection.
I have walked by my hives seen this and then looked to the sky and found that we were about to be blasted by a storm.
It looks like you have a very good hive with a very good flow on. I say this because most of the bees seem to bee working their way down to the hive. I did not see a lot of bees working their way away from the hive while looking at the hive.
It is sometimes hard to tell but it could bee orientation. Look for what bees are doing when they coming out, doing circles that keep getting bigger and bigger and always looking at the hive. The big tell tale for orientation is away from the five where the circles are large.
When it is just entering and leaving working bees, a few feet away from the hive, the bees are traveling at full speed straight to and from the hive.
Just stand a few feet in front of the hive and see if you will have bees plowing into you from working bees or doing circles in front of you from orientation. If you are seeing both, it is orientation with a lot of worker bees.

No problem. I remember when I first started seeing this and was very concerned.
