Have used dry horse poo for smoke, works but needs a good leaf fire to get a start.
The horse poo lasts as it is like compressed grass.
But nothing beats pine needles.

Beavo we've found the bark of the paperbark tree to be fantastic. I like pine needles too but we can never find them up here.

Paperbark is harder to find than pine needles down south.
eucalypt leaves are good plenty of smoke but tend to burn quicker the pine needles, both have nice smelling smoke.
In summer we use a lot of hessian as it doesn't spark like vegetation, old bags don't smell that good when burnt.
