Abstract
Research into the insecticidal control of adult small hive beetle culminated in the development of an insecticidal refuge trap for deployment inside commercial bee colonies. The device (APITHOR?) is comprised of a two‐piece rigid plastic shell encasing a fipronil‐treated corrugated cardboard insert. Comparison of key hive health parameters (frames of bees, area of brood and weight of honey produced) between ?control? and APITHOR?‐treated hives demonstrated no significant differences over a 6‐week trial conducted during a spring honey flow. Mean fiprole (fipronil plus its toxic metabolites) residues in honey ripened while the devices were in place did not exceed the limit of quantification (1 ?g/kg). In a 36‐day field trial conducted in a beetle‐infested apiary, all live adult beetles were eliminated from hives containing APITHOR?, while beetle numbers increased by approximately 20% in co‐located control hives.

There is nothing safe about putting fipronil in your hive. The beetles crawl in and crawl out dragging it through the hive and getting it in your honey. If it had one way doors one it, it would bee much better.

Jim, no disrespect meant, is this your opinion or did you read the report?

I looked at how it is made. Fat Beeman has been making a smaller version since I started Beekeeping. Never liked his trap either. I read most of the report.

This seems to be highly researched in Australia, and highly effective when (used as instructed). I am still looking for research to the contrary if such research exist which has an opposing find? This particular design from Australia is a trap within a trap, unlike Dons.? That is, of course, unless Don has made another version that I have not seen. I am thinking his version uses political signs? And if I remember correctly, Don uses boric acid? From what I understand, fipronil kills  on contact, so no crawling out of this special made trap and dragging poison throughout the super?  Touchy subject I realize.

Mr. Ben, your correct statement:  fipronil kills on contact.  Agreed.

Reason fipronil kills on contact, kills so fast..... the chemical is a nerve toxin.  I, as Jim, would not want a nerve toxin anywhere near my bees.

I have been around bees a long time, since birth.  I am a hobbyist so my answers often reflect this fact.  I concentrate on genetics, raise my own queens by wet graft, nicot, with natural or II breeding.  I do not sell queens, I will give queens  for free but no shipping.
