2 Deeps or 1 Deep for Brood?
I'm near Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

i was down there this time last year, and it was over 90 degrees. we'd already had frost here....they set up shower head on the end of garden hoses for us and cold showers never felt so good!!

the winters are usually mild. only a few days(maybe a weeks worth) are below freezing. Sometimes a hard freeze of 25ish or so. I definately would not like living up north, too cold, unless I'm skiing! I like being warm!
Are 2 deeps usually recommended for the North?

that's what was recommended to me. i have been trying to figure out how to do that before we freeze up good.

Yes.

I'd guess you can feed most of the winter if you need to. I would think one deep would do you but more wouldn't hurt and might give them more room to build up in the spring.

Does it depend on how big the hive is on how many deeps it takes to over winter them? If so whats the general rule? :?:

I use in summer 3 deeps for brood and no exluder.

In winter they have 1 or 2 deeps. I try to get 2 deeps for winter. Big hive gets early yield.

Mine are in a field, near the edge of the woods; last winter most had 1 deep brood and 1 med for honey stores, and sailed thru winter beautifully.

a single deep should be fine as long as they have plenty honey stored,

Thanks for the replies. Wintering with 1 deep and 1 med super should be fine. My main concern is should I use 2 Deeps or 1 Deep anytime. Through spring and summer is 1 Deep sufficient or should I use 2 Deeps?

How about all mediums and NO deeps. :)

If by the number of deeps you are limiting the brood nest (in other words you're using an excluder) then I'd go for two. A good queen often can have brood in several boxes.
