....what determines how is the drone hives, worker hives, and honey storage are arranged?   :?

The bees.  That's who decides in all my hives and has for the last 33 years...

The bees don't want to put brood all over the place.  This happens some in hives with worker cell foundation and not enough drone comb, but it does not happen in top bar hives.

Is there any particular pattern or of how they will draw out the comb?

I don't have my own TBHs yet but from what I've seen they'll start drawing out comb near the entrance first and setup the brood. As Michael said, they don't want to have brood all over the place. They'll start working back as they need more space. They'll work on building up several bars of comb at any one time but always front to back.

Even in Langs this seems to be the way they like to do it. I've not seen a different pattern.

What I noticed in my top bar hive when they were drawing out comb was, for the first 8 bars, it was predominantly worker brood.  Then, gradually going back you would see at firs an inch of drone comb just near to top, coming down to probably 4/5 of a comb being drone comb at the end.   The basic pattern of how comb is drawn is that, closer to the entrance, more worker comb.  Also, the higher up the comb, will usually account for more drone comb.  There wasn't any drone comb on my first 6 or 7 combs.

Where was the honey stores?? Is it held separate from the worker/drone comb?

Apis629

In a top bar hive, the honey stores will often be farthest from the entrance, just behind the last of the brood.   Gradually, as you move farther back in a hive, more and more drone/worker comb will be devoted towards honey storage.  Honey will always be stored mostly outside the broodnest but, the size of the broodnest fluctuates greatly with the year.

Yes and no.  They may start anywhere in the hive.  They will draw worker first, drone next, and honey storage last.

The brood nest is usually small worker in the center out to drone on the outside edges and then honey outside that.

>Where was the honey stores?? Is it held separate from the worker/drone comb?

The brood nest in any hive that the bees get to build the comb they want is consolidated.  There will not be brood anywhere except in the brood nest.  The honey will be in every nook and cranny left over.  There will always be some honey on the brood combs.  There will not be brood in the honey combs.

Thanks Mike,
That clears a lot of things up for me. I 'm new to this and I wasn't quite sure
on how honey was kept in the comb and brood too..
