I am looking around the forum and I still need this question answered. Today, went into my new split of 1 month ago. My split was 10 frames in a large super. I started feeding sugar syrup right from the start, but some beekeepers said if the bees are bringing in food, do not feed them sugar syrup now. So I stopped a few days ago. Well the babies were increasing and the hive seemed to be doing well (bringing in lots of pollen, orientation flights) I added another medium super on top about 10 days ago. Today I checked the hive and they hardly drew out any comb or made any honey. There was perhaps 1 frame partially filled with honey. I still have not gotten back into the bottom super to see if I have a queen yet or what they are doing down there. My question. do I have to feed this hive now since they are bringing in lots of pollen and some nectar? We are having a cooler period of weather this week, but next week should be back up into the 70's and everything is blooming around here. They  do not seem to have any signficant stores of honey. Will they be ok just bringing in whatever they are bringing in.

I don't know about others but my bees stop eating the syrup when they are bringing in plenty of nectar.  The also stay away from protein supplements when they're bringing in enough pollen.  I use homemade HBH in the beginning of spring feeding and if I feed in the fall and they will still leave it alone when they are bringing in plenty of the real stuff.  This probably doesn't help you, but it has been my experience over the last two falls and springs.  When they leave it alone I just remove it and get out of their way.

Everyone said it couldn't be done. But he with a chuckle replied, "I won't be one to say it is so, until I give it a try."  So he buckled right in with a trace of a grin.  If he had a worry he hid it and he started to sing as he tackled that thing that couldn't be done, and he did it.  (unknown)

If you only have one partially drawn frame on the hive body you added I would remove it. So the bees had less space to keep warm. Then add it back once the temperatures warm up. You should however look at the original box and check out how it is doing.

Since it was a cooler day I did not want to mess with the bottom super and the new queen. I will check next week to see if she is laying already and if they have any honey in the bottom box.

But understudy, do you think I need to feed this hive now??
