Honey Laws

Does anyone know where I can find the laws for my state (NC) regarding the sale of honey??? I am not wanting to be "BIG time" but a little on the side to help support my addiction. :evil:

Look for an Assoc. near you they might have them somewhere, if not go to the apiary laws in your state. They will tell you what you want to know. Just about every state has their laws on the net. Try "lexis-Nexis" I know the have them for TN. but not sure about NC. Will look up their laws and see what they have listed and will send a link for you.

      Also as far as labeling goes, the basic info that is required
on the label is weight of the product, identify the product and the producers contact info, ie, name, address, phone number...
This info is very basic and a more precise wording can  be  found at the North Carolina Agriculture weg site.......

Not much in the laws of NC except in chapter 106-634 /Article 55. Just tells of the commission being able to pass rules and reg to help assist beekeepers.

Thanks for the help guys. That is all I could find, too. Not to clear on selling honey. I also saw where they clearly laid out the selling of hives but not honey.

When it comes to getting information on processing, packaging, and labeling food the best place to get the necessary answers is the local health department.  They, after all, are the ones who monitor all food preperation outlets whether it's a restaurant, supermarket, packing plant, etc.

   What Brian said.  There should be something on line about amount of honey processed (weight or volume) before you are required to be inspected by the health department.

the 'cottage industry' type sales do not usually attract the attention of the state.  selling your eggs to a few folks, selling a bit of honey.  it's when you run into tax issues, or piss of someone who feels you are competing with them, that you may draw fire.

don't advertise and you'll probably be fine.  if you want to do bigger business, try hooking up with a farm co-op, or farmers market.

That is what I like about the people on this forum, you guys always give great advice. Thanks for your help. Still haven't found anything but I will try the health department. I just want to know now for my knowledge.

I think I am going to have to try to meet up with a few of these NC beekeepers when i am back up in NC in a little over week.
