I've been trying to get 2 hives to store enough honey to make it through winter. They were slow to build up, so I've been feeding light syrup for about a month or so.

I'm wonder if I should switch to 2:1. Why is heavy syrup advised for fall feeding? Is it simply more sugar and less water which means less curing time before it's capped?

One could do worse than be a swinger of birches.

From what I understand, that's exactly the point...they can fill and cap faster with the heavier stuff.

Exactly.  And less work for the bees.
