The cover IS larger than the feeder, and there is a gap...bees can crawl up into the gap. But the top should rest on the feeder on all sides, so the bees can't access the syrup through that gap. The flange on the feeder should totally cover the box below it. If you have a gap there, and it sounds like you do, maybe an inner cover and a closed shim of some sort on top that reduces the space enough to close the gap? Then they can access the feeder, but not use the gap as a top entrance.

Yes, we could kern down the opening to the super, but the other problem is the flange can warp, thereby creating yet more of a gap.  All in all I don't find the construction of the feeder flawed, but the design concept is a good one.

My boxes are from BetterBee, Mann Lake, Dadant, Kelley and LAPP's.  Fit fine with the top feeder.

Edit:  Also homemade box or two.
Everyone said it couldn't be done. But he with a chuckle replied, "I won't be one to say it is so, until I give it a try."  So he buckled right in with a trace of a grin.  If he had a worry he hid it and he started to sing as he tackled that thing that couldn't be done, and he did it.  (unknown)
