Hey there,

As I mentioned in my welcome message, I will be starting my first colony in the spring.  If anyone can point me in the right direction to get started I will be most grateful.

mgates61,

Welcome to the Forum. For us to help you along, please indicate on your profile where you live. Check your local and state agriculture extension offices for Beginner Beekeeping classes and Beekeeping Organizations, both are a great start in addition to what Understudy said  :-D

mgates61.  There has been a few posts concerning good books.  I resurrected one that I had put in last year of the books that I had found excellent.  The post follows:  Have a great and wonderful day, Cindi

There are strange things done in the midnight sun by the men who moil for gold.  The Arctic trails have their secret tales that would make your blood run cold.  The Northern Lights have seen queer sights, but the queerest they ever did see, what the night on the marge of Lake Lebarge, I cremated Sam McGee.  Robert Service

Thanks folks.  That should get me started and keep me busy for a bit.  I'm sure I'll be asking more qusetions. As soon as I can I will start a pic page to show the hives I am building.

mgates61.  Why don't you put in your profile your location, so when we look at your posts, we see that you are not "hopelessly lost".  I thought this was so funny when I see these poor souls who just don't know where they are, hee, hee  ;) :) :).  Have a beautiful and great day.  Cindi

I personally prefer, wether I post or not, this forum for the majority of my info. It doesn't always happen just like the book says. But you can be sure that someone on this forum has seen it or done it or atleast heard about it. :)

What I did when starting out, is to:
1. Get a lot of information from my mentor
2. Go to the library and read through a bunch of books

That was before I discovered all of the internet information!  The nice thing about  books is they present a single path of beekeeping (right or wrong), this helps keep things straightforward, like a nice steady stream, forming a nice basis of understanding.

Then, after you get a good basis, then venture out into the forums.  It is like going into the ocean, just so much information and opinions and ideas, waves of information and ideas hitting from all sides.

Ask a simple question about foundation and you will get 20 answers from 15 posts and 3 arguments and 2 discussions.

And this is all before you even get you hands full of propolis.  That is where you really sort through it all and decide what works for you.

But have fun most of all, it is an addicting hobby (for most of us here).  Don't be afraid to ask questions since we love to help and hear ourselves type, but try the search function out as well, there is heaps of info here.
