So I suit up, and lift the hive body up off the SBB which had the excluder on it.  I will screen the opening closed but it will just fall off when I go to move it.  I will have the new SBB right next to it.  I also need to place a new top.  Should I smoke the bees?  It will be dusk...or I could just do it fast???  Or wait to change the top when I need to feed again??

Thanks much

I'm a little confused but I will try and answer. It would be helpful to have your smoker going as the hive has established itself and may become a little more defensive than when they were just a swarm. You can change the top this evening if you like. Treat this hive just like any other established hive. The only difference perhaps is if you have a virgin queen that needs to take a mating flight. She will usually go back to the hive after mating.

I'm also a bit unclear.  I'd lay something on the ground (bottom, top inner cover etc.) to set the box on.  Pry between the box and the includer and lift the box off and set it on the "something" on the ground.  Pry the includer off and remove it.  Put the box back on.  Smoke would be good.  Do this during the day.  Not after dark.

They are acting like they are swarming again...I heard the sound, they are swirling just above and beside the hive.  They are clustered on the front of the hive...any ideas?

DayValleyDahlias

Now they have calmed down...but it was the action and sound of swarm...what is going on?

If it was about 2:30 I would say they are orienting -they do it according to the position of the sun in relation to the time of day -it changes as the seasons progress-that is why there are certain times of morning and late afternoon when swarms take flight-they are fine-the excluder will probably just fall off or come off very easy -just pick up the box and get the excluder out of there -you can place box on same bottom and move it -or you can place another bottom in the new spot first -dosent matter -its not complicated -no matter what you do it will be ok -dusk is good -dont want many bees flying if you are moving the box it comes off cleaner that way -do every thing at one time-    RDY-B
