I usually like to remove a few frames and crawl right inside the hive with the bees and close the innercover above me.  That's how close I get.

I sit about 6 inches from the nearest frame.  But then with an observation hive that is perfectly safe!!  :-D  Ahhhh.....

I try not to get to close to mine without a suit. Yesterday, I tried to video my Husband going into our hives.  The hive he was in was calm and not flying much so I thought (ha ha) I was safe about five feet away and out of the flight pattern.  Silly silly me, the other hives about fourty feet away did not like it and one got me. Never, never unless we get some like (I think it is JP's?) where I can go out in shorts and they won't bother me.
