Last week I gave one of my hives to my Uncle.  Before I did I sat the super and a half of honey on one of my new swarms.  Went to check in today to see how they were doing.  I just had on a long sleve button up and a veil.  Evidently their new found riches made them defensive, as soon as I removed a rack from the top super about 30 bees swarmed me.  Luckily I was only stung once through my shirt on the elbow.  I had heard in another post that plantain worked great to help the pain of a sting, well let me tell ya, it worked instantly!!!!  I picked a leaf, gave it a little chew to get the juices flowing and put it on the sting and the pain was gone, and stayed gone.  What a lovely little plant. The great part is, it is growing all around my hives. :-D

When I was a kid I got poison Ivy/oak all the time and my mother had heard that plantain was good for the rash.  We used to pick the leaves and put them in the blender with a couple drops of water and keep the puree in a sealed jar.  It did stop the itch.

Which plantain worked for you, the broad leaf or narrow leaf plantain?

I always forget about it when I am working the hives & get stung...have to make a post-it note before the next check in.. ;)  Also need to make sure something hasn't wee'd on it before chewing... :-P  Jody

Both work, but I think broad leaf is alittle better. My yard has both but more of narrow variety. yes it works on any minor skin irritation too. Mosquitoes especially.

any skin irritation seems to benefit some. Mosquitoe bites, poison ivy, even small burns rashes etc. If it itches, I try it b/c it usually gives some relief and quickly. Sometimes the bite marks, sting marks just disappear on me. great stuff.
