This thread reminded me that butterflies also seem to prefer muddy water, apparently for the minerals in the mud. Maybe it's the same thing for bees.

Maybe I'll try an experiment this year: put out some water with mineral salt (like the salt licks that are sold for horses) in it, and see if the bees go for it.
