Entrances and Honey storage

Will bees generally store honey away from the entrance?  I have nuc-size hive I have been raising since June with a top entrance and 4 med. nucs high.  They are storing honey in the bottom med.  My other hives are storing in the top and they have bottom entrances.  Also, is bottom storage OK going into winter or is it better above the cluster where it would get more heat?
