FRAMEshift

I've heard tell that beekeeping is more art than science and if there are 4 beeks in a room, you'll get 5 different opinions.   I figure the point is that we just make a decision, go for it and deal with the consequences, make appropriate changes and repeat.   [Beekeeping as a metaphor for life?]

Boy is that the truth!  I'm not trying to discourage you from your chosen course.  Just want to make sure you know the pros and cons of each choice.  If your husband can make the boxes, maybe you could buy the frames.  They are cheap if you are willing to assemble them yourself.  And most suppliers will offer free shipping at least once a year.

I have no theoretical problem with top bar hives, but they are more difficult to manage.  Not because they are horizontal (all our hives are horizontal) but because of side adhesion and lack of comb support.  I have to say, I think the frame is the most important beekeeping innovation of all time.   Horizontal hives with standard frames seem to me the best trade off.... for someone as lazy as me.   :-D
