Hello all.  I have some smoking chips for smoking food that I won't likely use.  I have some apple, cherry, and maple.  Can these be used for my smoker?

What about sawdust/chips?

What about cedar?

I would hesitate using cedar there are some natural bug killers in that wood.  The pellet stove pellets are usable but I don't.  Old burlap/jute bags are my favorite with long needles from pines being next best.  Shame on you for wasting that meat smoking wood!

If it makes you feel better they are the cheap chips and not the chunks.  I will be moving in around two months.  I don't suspect that I will be smoking any meat between now and then and may as well use them for something.

I accidentally discovered that lathe shavings work great for smoker fuel if you have access to any (that would be using cutting lathe tolls rather than scrapers).  They are more substantial than sawdust and lighter than wood shavings or chips. I thought that they might compact too much and smother the fire, but they just smolder slowly.

I got a small chipper a few years ago.  I pick up little dead limb in the yard, once in a while will add a green one and chip into a 5 gal bucket.  Try to keep a bucket or two ready.  Put a little paper in smoker, lite it, add some chips , when you get it going pretty good fill smoker and repack contents.

I use shavings from my wood planner.
I also use wood pellets when I need smoke for a long period.

My method to a tee. Works great!!!
