Potgieter

Hi
My name is gary potgieter , I'm in my second year of bee keeping. I have 10 hives ( 5 x lang, 3x warre, 1x top bar and 1 x hive made of stacked shallow supers). My bees are the meanest creatures god made. I'm 40 yrs old and run a montessori school.

Welcome to Beemaster. You like a challenge don't you. Which hive do you like the most.? Which hive is your best honey producer?

Do you know what kind of bees they are? If they ain't worth it, you may consider re-queening it.

I suspect they are cape bees. If I am not mistaken, Apis melifera bees do not survive in cape bee territory.

My area is on the border of the cape bee and the African, so I have a hybrid of the two. That unfortunately means I get all the bad of both but none of the good. I get the cape bees ability for clone worker layers and the African bees aggression.

Our bees only fill one brood box and if there is a very heavy flow they will fill a shallow super. I will most likely only be putting top bar hives out this year as swarm boxes, it's just cheaper! Our spring has just started and am hoping to end the season with 40 hives .....let's hope!
