I gues this is a dumb question but I will ask anyway!
When adding supers should you put the new one on next to the brood box or just place it on the top of the full super??

sc-bee

Never a dumb question.... but you choose to ask one that can't be answered or at least gets 20 or more different answers by 10 different beekeepers. It usually comes down to a matter of preference. Some like to bottom super some like to top super. And too some it depends on time of year and flow conditions etc.

SC-bees is right, but I would add a lot of beeks will mix frames and have half comb and half foundation in each. It works quite well that way, too.

All of my supers are new with only foundation and I only have 1 hive that is producing as I sold 2 others and lost 1 in the winter.Have traps out (NO Luck so far) going to do a cut out next week I hope.I have a small batch of bees which I am attempting to start a new hive,I opened them up yesterday to put in the new queen,Boy!! They are grumpy for sure tried to sting me many time and I got me on the back of my hand.
This is a learning experience with this hive!I am not sure of anything but I bought a new queen and am feeding them 1 to 1 sugar water maybe they can build up as it is a long time till winter.

""or just place it on the top of the full super??"

Well, I guess you won't be doing that if all your supers are foundation. I thought there might be a full super on the hive you could pull frames from and put in the new super, replacing them with foundation.

I always just added one on top once it was 80% full, today however, i did pull a full super and add a box below it. Just for curiosity's sake I suppose, plus I wanted to get a peek in the brood box anyhow. G
