Hello, just finished painting my bee box which was one of my dads or grand fathers I found in the shed and ordered my first nucleus from from Kangaroo island which I will get in October. As im starting out was hoping to get any advice from people and see if anyone else is on here from Sydney.

Hi Sydney guy. Get yourself a couple of books and browse this forum. Get all the info you can before putting down your first hive. Set up your bees during the warmer month's when there will be plenty of pollen and nectar available to allow them to gain a good foothold for winter. Don't expect to be eating honey in the first year especially from a nuc.
Enjoy watching them grow as a hive, I spent hours sitting beside my first hive just watching them and their interactions with each other. Good luck.

Hi Sydney Guy
How many frames is your hive? and how many frame nuc are you getting?

Sydney guy

Hi sorry for the late reply I was overseas. I'm not really doing it for the honey production just more a hobby, I find the bees fascinating lol. Does anyone recommend any good books? I'm getting a 5 frame nuc and my boxes are 10 frame. Thank you both for your replies :)

Hi there,
I'm in Sydney too and am relatively new (see some of my previous posts, I had no idea)
Depending on where you live, there are some great beginners courses around. I did one with illawarra beekeepers in Sutherland, it was excellent.

Also for a good book try the Doug Purdie book I think called "a beginners guide to backyard beekeeping". He is based in Sydney so you know the info is relevant to location, and he is often on Simon Marnie's radio show on ABC702 of a sat/sun morning.

If you get stuck, this forum is awesome. I've also found the guys at Hornsby Beekeeping Supplies (also in Mt Druitt) really helpful.

Good luck!

Hi chiefman, watched the video, nice work.
I had a look at the Parramatta club but is a little to far for me. I'm considering joining the macarthur club. I was very surprised one was so close.

Hi JimW,
I have been doing a lot of online research and reading. I have actually ordered 2 more complete boxes so might start now with 3 hives to learn with. I'm actually pretty lucky because my family know a lot about bees so they can show me everything I need to know.

I will be taking a look at that book you mentioned.

I actually went to Hornsby beekeeping supplies at Mt Druitt 2 weeks ago and bought some gear. They were really good.
