When the first few snows fall I plan on moving a hive to another location.

My plan is to strap the hive lightly with ratchets and make the move.

Anyone ever done this in the past?
I wouldn't be having to worry about confusing the hive / orientation.

Any thoughts / tips / tricks?

I have moved more than a few hives using ratchet straps.  Because I live in Florida it was not based on time of snowfall.  Unless the cold affects the move in some way, I don't see a problem with your plan.

It can go very well or very badly.  I only move hives when it's warm and they have time to sort things out without getting chilled.

I have moved several hives over the years with no problems. I have always moved mine in the late fall while still warm enough for the bees the orientate themselves and I am still feeding. My son will attest to the fact that it is not wise to drop a hive.      -Mike

With as brittle as beeswax can be when  cold I would think jostling would be bad...but then again I have zero experience with that where I am 😀
