Is it too early to start making splits in mid central Ohio?

Are you seeing drones?  Are your hives strong enough?  I don't know about Ohio but I've got about 15 nucs that I need to check to see if the queen has mated yet and laying.  I had two of my hives come through winter very strong and were backfilling the brood nest.  So I had to do something.  That was 3 weeks ago.  I may have a couple more hives that need attention this weekend.

Thank you cao. I made two splits from the 2 strong hives a few days ago.

You're welcome.  Keep us posted on how it goes.  I found queens in nine of ten nucs that I checked.  I still have a few more to check this weekend.

My bees were 3 to 4 weeks ahead of where they were last year.

Same here, I am scrambling to catch up/keep up..   Did ten splits (that HAD TO BE DONE NOW) today but added purchased queens since the weather is a bit finicky and mating flights might be interrupted due to rain/wind etc...   Need to do about 50 more splits, but hoping to wait until I can make my own queens.
The bees were certainly aware that this was going to be an early spring!
