I can't say I hate the government, but I am proudly distrustful of them.

All those mentioned already are great.  I really love Rusty Burlew's website HoneyBeeSuite.com.  Any of Tom Seeley's books are good.  For basic management I like "The Beekeeper's Handbook" by Diana Sammataro and Alphonse Avitabile.  My favorite bee biology book is "Honey-Maker: How the Honey Bee Worker Does What She Does" by Rosanna L. Mattingly, but it's published by a small publisher, and I don't know if it'd be available to you, Rothbart.  I'm also reading Mark L. Winston's "Biology of the Honey Bee" right now and really enjoying it.
I come from under the hill, and under the hills and over the hills my paths led.  And through the air, I am she that walks unseen.

When the lid goes back on, the bees will spend the next 3 days undoing most of what the beekeeper just did to them.

Reading books will not make you a beekeeper. It will help but beeing in the hive without gloves will push you along faster.

I agree books will not make you a beekeeper. In fact I tested this on myself.
Started with 10 hives when everybody told me 3 is enough. But me hardheaded
and with trust in my ability to learn didn't listen. And then swarms started
coming out. Good times.

Oh my gosh, did we all fail to recommend Cushman?  How is that possible?!  We stink at this.  :cheesy:

It's certainly not your fault.  I just can't believe none of us mentioned Cushman to you, he's a wealth of information.
