I notice around here this year that honey production seems to be better than the past few years, and have been wandering around the forum gathering up ideas for a possibility of doing some beekeeping myself (very much a beginner)...Are mites still a problem lately? Thanks

usually keepeers do make a fall treatment. after all the bees have lain, they treat against varoa, so as few mites as possible go through winter with the bees. since there is no brood, mites are only on bees, so treatments are very efficient

Most of the USA had poor honey production due to adverse weather conditions.  You must be located in one of those pockets of prosperity in the face of famine that seems to pop up now and then.
