When is the best time to cut the grass around the hives? At night? Mid Day?

I put landscape fabric under mine, and then if I have to I spray round up.

We keep an area surrounding the hive clear of growth...we stopped using Roundup type weed killers years ago due to reports that is was harmful ( plus the dogs would walk on the weeds post spray etc )...We use a product called "Pure & Natural" it does the trick...We mow the area around the hives around 1 pm, so far no troubles!  The weed cloth is a great idea...maybe I will give it a go to keep the weds down, and cover it with a pretty mulch...

I just fire up the old weed eater and have at it they don't seem to mind to much. That being said though I have heard of some hives going a little ballistic so at the very least you might want to wear a bee suit just as a precausion. As to a good time I can only get to mine when I have time so anytime is good for me but the middle of the day would probably be best since many of them are out foraging that way there are a few less to irratate.

I do maintenance around the hives at sundown, still plenty of light to work and hardly any sorties by the bees. There are a few hanging out by the entrance, but they pay no mind to the buzzing of the trimmer.  :)
