Bees on the news

Ah thats not to bad.I was painting a house in Studio City California in 1995.The guy next door came over and asked if I new someone who could remove bees.I went inside with him 5 of his rooms on the second floor smeeled like a hive also.I put my ear on the wall an you could here the bees BUZZING in all five rooms.I asked him how long they have been there?He said he was first aware of them about 10 years earlier.I peeke through the access door in the upstairs hallway with a flashlight.The Bees were comming in through the roof vents.I counted 5 hives it looked like they had swarmed and just went to a differnt part of the attic.

He had the house covered with a tent and filled with gas like they do termites here.I had under-estimated the number of hives up there there were a couple in the walls also.

They halled out buckets of comb just buckets.When the removed the plaster in the upstais rooms full of bees comb honey un real.

It cost 3500 just to poison the place

It looks like, if I'm seeing things correctly, that the hive could be in the eave of that house, or the wall, but it looks very possible to be in the eave, which would be a far less expensive job all away around, than to open the wall from the inside, which would probably have to be done since it looks like the outer walls are stucco. I removed some bees for a guy this season who described over the phone to be a rather large hive that turned out to be 4 separate hives.

One hive is fun, 4 is better, JP

Don't think she said she put her ear up to the wall, and when things are quiet, what sounds to be in the wall could be the eave, but if it were you or I doing the removal, the first thing we'd do is verify where the hive was located.

OK. I watched it again. If you look real close on the close ups you can see the bees going into a hole in the wall.... Not up and into the top of the wall as I also thought they were doing the first time I saw it.

Hey Jerry, you heard what she said about it would cost whatever to just smoke the bees out without removing the hive. How many times have you heard this statement before? Like you can smoke all the bees out in the first place. Another misconception people throw at me is, so you just get the queen and the rest leave right? Or yeah, I had bees yrs ago and the guy came out and got the queen and all the bees followed and that was that.

This is the women who I mentioned in my thread the media smells blood.

I went to her house today.
Now the back story on this is that the bees have been there for three years.
So I went in with the expectation that this thing would have a huge hive.
I was going to perform due diligence though because bees can surprise you.
Also Hulett pest control is also trying to go for a piece of the action. Now I told her I was only going to do a survey today. And I stuck to that. Good thing to. The bees surprised me.

With were they were going in at it would be very probable that they were going in the wall.  So I drill two 2" holes with a hole saw in the wall inside her bedroom. Just below where the top stud would be. And I found...... nothing. Well not quite there was a lot of insulation in the wall but no bees. Bees don't like fiberglass insulation either. They won't build comb in it. Near yes but in it no.

Now she has a flat ceiling which means they could be in the roof rafters but not likely. The space gets to hot to sustain a proper nest. That left the the facia. So I went out with the ladder next the the electrical service conduit smoked em and removed the bottom part of the facia(it was aluminum). Sure enough there they were. With some of the oldest nastiest comb I have ever seen. Now these also may be bees that are tough as rocks and just as dumb as a box of also. The bees are trying to build comb beyond the facia into the roof trusses. All the other trusses have insulation except this one. And the bees try to build comb in it. Then during the day the roof trusses get so hot the comb falls off. There are literally piles of mishaped comb up there. There isn't a large amount of comb. I can probably fit the whole thing in a nuc.

Now my goal is to go out there next Sunday. And with the TV cameras behind me do this removal and save the day.

Now the fun thing about this is everyone myself included was ready to tear down the walls. But I was going to look to be sure first. I wonder how many others would have?

Sorry I didn't take any pictures there wasn't that much to see.

Could have easily been in the wall, that's why its so important to find out where the hive is before you bring in the demolition crew. Another case where it seems the bees just didn't pick a good spot for their hive, with the intense heat that would be generated in this area, hence the ugly comb. Good luck Brendhan!

Be very careful. The probability of embarrasment goes up proportionally w/ the number of television cameras!
