Hi Y'all. How big is the 3kg tub of apiguard(physicsl size) i want to ask my sister to purchase it for me but i need to know if its small enough to put in her hand luggage. Secondly can she just walk into the supermarket, pick up a tub and proceed to the check-out counter? :-D seriously, do you need any form of documentation whether it be a letter/ beefarmer's i.d. etc. Thirdly, is there a store near JFK Airport?

Kathyp

she won't be able to bring it through in her carry on luggage.  it's a gel/paste and you can only take 3oz containers through in carry on.  she's have to check it.

you don't need anything to buy it.  just go to a bee place and pick it up.

The tub is about the size of a small shoe box or very larg tub of butter. Think very large can of coffee beans about 8-9lbs or so in size. It would fit in her checkable lugagge but be fairly large. No place near JFK that I am aware of. The closest place might be Bee Commerce in Conneticut, or have it shipped to her before she leaves states. The tin foil pack of ten is small and breaks down into ten pieces if necessary and might be easier to transport for your sister.

she arrives on sunday and leaves on tuesday(flight attendant) i need to treat about 40 hives and figure it would be more economical to just get the tub (too expensive here). I'll find out if she can order it online and have it shipped to arrive at her hotel on monday.

P.S. how are plans coming on?

Will get cell phone( 5 bucks a day) when I arrive. Plan to rent car and swing on by... just trying to finalize plans. Hard to do in Jamiace from here for some things..but hoping to hook up. Keeping fingers crossed here and cant wait to get away for a week. I'll PM you later next week to finalize plans. Will need a phone number to call

thats cool, will send you the number.  Another question, the 10 pack apiguard, does it provide both treatments for 10 hives or is it just 1 treatment dose?

Ten pack is five hives worth if I remember correctly.

5 hives. that means i would need about 16 packs @ $23.+ per pack. the tub is $83.+ (based on dadant's prices) and can treat 50 hives. I will have to try and get the tub

You might consider oxalic acid which is very inexpensive, or formic acid which is less expensive then apiguard and both are non-synthetic. Apply oxalic by vaporizing it w/ homemade pipe system. Do a search on this site.

I had considered that however i have not found oxalic acid out here in any form. (folks i have spoken to dont even know what it is). Dont think i had checked out the formic acid though

Most people call it wood bleach, sold in most hardwate stores. If you cant get it, your sister can easily get it at any home depot or Lowes while in NY. About $6US for a small tub, .You use about a teaspoonful perhive. I would imagine each tub is about 70 - 80 aaplications as a guess

If you do go with the tub of Apiguard, make sure it is well protected.  The container is sufficient, but somewhat flimsy.  If it were to break open (rough luggage handling) they'd probably declare and emergency and clear the airport out not knowing what it was.

now wouldnt that be a sight

Sean, when vapourizing Oxalic Acid, it must be the crystals that are used.  The directions with my vapourizer indicate CLEARLY not to use any liquid O.A.  I didn't realize it came in a liquid form, but it must not be vapourized in that state.  Beautiful day, great and wonderful life.  Cindi
