One of my friends hives was victim to kids Thursday night and Friday night. Thursday it was pushed down a gulley destroying the brooder box and frames, 1 super was saved. Queen is missing. Placed super on a new brooder with empty foundation. Friday night knocked over again with burnout out marks in the road. Now iheworked 24 hours yesterday. Set the super on the new brooder and will be playing Barney tonight on stakeout. Lawmen came out today and made a report.
My question is he wasting his time right? Should he just harvest the winter super for himselfself? God help these kids if he catchs them. No jail for them, couple days in the hospital might teach a lesson.

If the bees are in a very weakened state and lack numbers he probably should do a combine and harvest the weak hive's honey.

If it were me I would install a moultrie infrared camera up high and discreetly. I would move the hives first, to another location out of harm's way and place some placebo hives for the troublemakers. Catch them on film and then call the cops. The kids may not be back for some time, why wait up all night, put the camera out.

Question/statement, how do you know its kids doing this? Could be an angry neighbor?

I think the camera idea is right on, maybe two to get different angles. Lord help those kids if they do come back.

replace hive w/ AHB!!

I like your thinking... :-D

A game cam would work well.  I agree catching whoever on film is the clincher.  Move the hive as JP suggested and setup a decoy.

When I was 13 I vandalized my uncle's beehives because I thought it was fun!

When I was caught in the act my uncle bought me a bee suit and my punishment was to report to his bee yard after school and work the hives with him untill I re-pay the damages + the bee suit cost + the rent for me being on his property for two hours every friday while I worked the bees! Did that all spring, sumer and fall of 1985...!

I have been a lover of beekeeping and bees ever since because of this. Hence, although fun and funny.. AFB will only make the kids hate and mistreat the bees even more!

I wasn't trying to have them become beekeepers, but teach them to stop vandalising-this one hive if nothing else!

The punks oughta be doing community service...By working those bees and fixing the damage that Miska has to fix. Make 'em do like Rodni had to do, but also make them pay money to get it all done....I dont suppose that the justice system would go along with that as it would be considered "Too risky" for a non professional...The punks parents will probably bail them out of this mess...(Ok, maybe not...I'm getting judgemental about parents I dont even know).

A couple boards scattered around the hive with nails pointing up in them would work nicely, too. To keep away skunks, of course.  ;)

Could also borrow one of Frantz's earth movers and make a pit right in front the bee hives, they bother the bees, they go in the pit, you then don't need the camera, unless you want to get thousands of hits on you tube, now that is something I'd like to see.

"Revenge is best served cold."

Had a man on my paper route when a teenager that used to have the older teenagers cut the corner short by driving through his yard.  Happened about once a month.  He would go out reseed the lawn, plant more shrubbery, and just as it was starting to grow someone would drive through his yard again.

My Dad was on the Police Department then and he gave the guy a suggestion on how to support his shrubbery to protect it from damage.   The man followed my dad's suggestion and a month later was awoken by a very lound CLANG in the middle of the night.  He went out into the yard to find a car sitting in the middle of his new shrub, front axle and oil pan broken by a drive line he'd cemented into the ground  to support his shrub.  They had to pull the car off with a Tow Truck.  A 5 ft drive line buried 3 1/2 ft in cement will tear the undercarriage right out of a car.

Never had the problem again.  The next shrub he planted is still there to this day, 35 years later.

Now if you follow that kind of thinking I'm sure you can come up with a solution.

I like the ditch or cement deal..would be fun to hear them explain to parents, police & insurance co. why the car is stuck in the middle of where it isn't supposed to be. Towing isn't cheap & they will have to repair the car, which is expensive also...keep the little snots busy for a good long time!  J

I like the open pit method. When we were having water come down our road these kids didn't know a trench was dug out by our house and came to vandalize it. They fell in (Ha HA) and one hurt their ankle. Oh Well made me feel good!!

Run trip wires around the hives, what hooks them to is his call.

That hive MPG is referring to is mine.  Ended up stealing two frames from another hive put in new brooder box and set the winter super on it.  Requeened last Friday.  Thanks for all the advice although some was not as "harmful" as some of my ideas.  Thanks to MPG for introducing me to this site and will probably get hooked on this as other sites.  thanks all, Steven
