This my first year with the bees.  I started with a 5 frame deep NUC from a local supplier.  The "girls" are a mixture of Carniolan and Italian.  They look a lot like Italians but they act like Carniolans.  I regrettably started with a typical "beginners" kit. ie 2 10 frame deeps for brood with Pierco frames.  I've since added a screened bottom board and a slatted rack.  I'm hoping to migrate to mostly mediums with foundationless frames in the coming seasons.  I'll also be experimenting with some other subspecies; specifically Caucasians and Russians this coming spring.  That and experimenting with different entrance and ventilation arrangements.  I know I've got a lot to learn, but I'm certainly looking forward to the journey.

Thanks everyone.  I am unquestionably hooked already.  My first season with the one hive was definitely educational.  The weather was horrible, it never stopped raining all summer long.  Thanks to their "Carnie" heritage they were very frugal and made it through the season in fine shape, even if there wasn't any extra for me.  So now with the snow falling outside I'm planning my equipment needs and playing around with various hive stand designs.  I'll be expanding from the one hive to four next year, so I think it's safe to say I've got the "bug" no pun intended. :-D
