Where do you place them in your hive? How good are they in controlling the SHB?

You place them in brood chamber between frames on top. As near the edges where bees get corralled as possible. I have fair to moderate success with them.

Do a search on beetle eaters and AJ's. You will find info in this search (Disease and Pest section).

I had a piece of thick black vinyl, like what's used for water garden or pond liners, and cut them to the size of the traps and placed them over them after putting the traps between the frames.  Theory is they seek dark protected places and run and hide under the vinyl and fall in more readily.  My traps seem to catch quite a few beetles.  Don't know how much the cover thing works.

Ive been told to use cover (AJ has suggested the mat but it is not mentioned when you buy it) --- I think it helps. Linoleum was a little stiff. I thought about trying a piece of old inner tube from a tire.

AJ replied in post once and said look @ the picture in the advertisements he runs in Bee Culture. The mat appears to be rather large if I remember right?

Here's a short video, his cover goes all the way across the frames. My thinking is, that cuts off ventilation. Wouldn't it? I use a piece linoleum flooring thats just bigger than the trap (with minimal success) but think sc-bee may be on to some thing with the inner tube or some thing more flexible.
