Just to follow up, for the benefit of the folks who offered advice: I'm back from my travels, and spent some time inspecting the hives this morning. The bees seemed happy-- remarkably docile, in fact, as I checked them-- and the combined hive, with 3 deeps nearly full, should be plenty strong going into the winter.

Still no extra honey for me, but I'm blaming that on the rainy June.
