Don't be so sure the bees don't know the difference. I have CARPENTER BEES that make pretty precise measurements and have contracted with my honeys! :-D
Our carpenter bees live in my porch ceiling - I've learned if I leave them alone they only make one hole - so far so good, over 15 years like this!

Ann, if carpenter bees drilled one hole and no more its because they didn't like chewing through the wood or the paint on the wood, but let me tell you, if they like the wood you WILL have multiple holes to look forward to.

BTW, when that 3/8" hole goes up it then  parallels the wood, into a channel. With time and repeated use you will eventually see the channel. That's the sign to change the wood out, with treated wood if at all possible.

JP, I've learned a lot watching those carpenter bees, and one thing I'm certain of - they're using the same hole every year, and there's just one 'couple'.  I have never seen more than one male drone, and there hasn't been another hold drilled in three years.  I know they're a huge problem down south, but up here, at least at my house, they're pretty well behaved.  He and I were enjoying the porch the other day, I was cleaning and he was buzzing around my head.  Hopefully they stay that well behaved! :)
