I wear a full suit when tearing through the hives but I never use a smoker, I've never been stung through the suit so to me a smoker is redundant.

I wear a veil because it keeps the bees from bouncing off of my face. I hate getting head butted. Bees get in my veil all the time and for some reason they always want back out. Sometimes If I get three or four in there I will take it off and let them out once the buzzing starts to get annoying, but I don't let them out because I am afraid of getting stung.

Up til a few years ago I didn't wear anything other than a veil. I started wearing my suit and gloves because started developing a strong reaction to stings.

The thing that worries me about a bee in your veil is if it tries to crawl in your ear or nose, or gets up near your eyelid an you blink on it and cause it to sting...happened to my son and he looked like Rocky for a couple of days....but he is still calm if a bee gets in his veil...not me, I want out of there ASAP

I have been told that a sting in the eye will do permanent damage to your eye.  That is enough reason for me to wear a veil. Most of the time, that is all I wear as far a bee equipment goes, but I do wear a veil.
Winter Ventilation: Wet bees die in hours maybe minutes, no matter how much honey is in the hive.
