Deet and the beehive

I was reading in ABJ this month about putting DEET around the swimming pool to keep the bees out of it.   Has anyone ever tried DEET around a bee hive?  I was wondering if I would still get stung if I used enough bug spray?   I normally get stung on the legs when one of those buggers make it up my shorts.  And do you think DEET would work instead of Bee Quick?  What are ya'lls ideas on DEET?  I know it works on the skitters.

i would imagine it does until you give them a reason to sting.  then all bets are off.

I never tried DEET, but another typical mosquito repellent, citronella, just attracts bees...

DEET masks your production of carbon dioxide. That is one of the things the mosquitos are homing in on. I don't think the bees are interested in the CO2, I believe it's more a visual thing with them.

honestly.....i tried deep woods off and it has deet.  it didn't work.  in fact, it may have attracted them.  it certainly didn't repel them.

I was wondering about the effect of Neem, Tea Tree,thyme oil, basil oil and other repellants too, but not to the extent of trying them when working with our bees :)
And oh yeah,  Lemongrass and citronella certainly DO attract the bees.
