Generally how close are the drone congregation areas to the hive?

I guess a more specific question would be, is the DCA within the foraging area of the apiary?

That's like asking how far the local bar is from the home of it's clientele. A DCA is the gathering area for drones from the whole area, not just one hive or apiary. It may be a hundred feet trip for some drones and a 3 mile trip for others.
