kbee, has being a beekepper in new york caused loss of hives most every winter for you, or do you have something in place you do for protection?
I live in upstate NY and being a new beekeeper this year have been told by locals that I will lose most of my bees every winter regardless, any truth to this?

thank you everyone  :-D JP checked out your pics very nice got to love those cut outs soooo much fun! hvac professor being this is my first year beekeeping i haven't went through a winter yet but i have been doing some research for about two year before i started. i also heard that there are alot of loses during the winter around here. just think it's a bee keeper mistake. not venting it correctly. and taking to much food from them. the way i think im going is  reduce entrance, make a hole in my top deep towards the upper corner that is 5/8 big so that a wine cork can be placed in hole when not needed in the flow season  tack some mesh wire in the hole so that no mice can enter,  take a super put screen on the bottom of it then put some ceder chips and straw in it then put inside cover on making sure that the cover is flipped so that moister can escape then putting straw on top of it then placing the top on and putting a wind breaker on the north side of the hives which is a roll of burlap stretched out and staked up. that's it. no wrapping. wrapping may not be wrapped tight enough and that will cause moister build up an if it freezes you just made an icebox. plus if the hive warms up to much the bees may begin premature cleansing flights..plus you would want a young queen large population of bees 8-10 frames covered with bees, honey supply around 90 lbs or cured sugar syrup and pollen,free of mites and disease free  if you have all those thing in check your out come is probably going to be pretty good. (I HOPE) sound like a lot of work but i know the work that i went through getting all my bees i don't want to lose them. i'm going to see a old time beekeeper that's been doing it for about 30 years so i hope he has some good input for me and i'll get back.
