in one of my hives the other day i saw what looked like a bunch of dead bees at the bottom of the hive.  upon closer inspection i saw that they were not dead and they were all drones.

do the girls round them up into a herd on the bottom board like that prior to evicting them for winter ?

Mine just kick them out before they can fly, if they let them get that far. I once saw a bee dragging out a young drone that did not want to leave. It dragged onto the edge to the ramp on the front of the hive and the drone held on. The bees wings went full throttle until the drones leg, he was being dragged by, broke off. That bee slammed into the ground 2 feet from the hive. It took over 2 minutes for it to recover. The drone went back into the hive. It was funny to see.

When mine got pushed out a few weeks ago, I would sometimes find a bunch of drones "hiding" in a corner or inactive section of the hive during inspection. Usually my intrusion would attract attention from the workers who would then start chasing them about and draggin them out.

I saw a large ball of bees on the front of one of my hives when I drove up this week. Thought I had a swarm, but it was about 100 - 150 drones being herded by many more workers. I had never seen them herd drones outside the hive before.
