Just to make sure I'm getting it right, normally the notch is in the back and facing up, but when using it as an upper entrance, the notch should be down and to the front, with the telescoping cover pushed so all the spare room is towards the side with the notch?

The notch should stay to the front most of the time. It is alright to leave the notch up as they can walk across the cover and use the hole in the center. You will notice one side of the board is deeper than the other. With the notch up the shallow side is down. This makes it less likely they will burr comb the inner cover to the frames below. If the notch is toward the front of the hive, slide the outer cover toward the front as far as it will go once it is situated over the inner cover.

If you ever want photos I'd be glad to go out to the hive and snap a couple.
Did you acquire bees yet?

My bees have been entering the top more this year than other years. But thery are migrating to the bottom as it gets warmer it seems.

Yep, I picked up my bees on Friday and got them installed on Saturday.  Monday morning I looked out to see my entrance reducer was knock out, so I started working on skunk proofing them.  This is the next step, I think.

Perhaps some tack strips they use for laying carpet?
They also say if the hive is raised a ways off the ground the bees will work the underbelly(soft tissues) of the skunk.I do not know the preferred height for this .But mine are only about 10 to 12 inches off the ground and I have not had a skunk problem "yet".
